Plato was born in Athens around 428 BC into a wealthy, well-connected family. A young man of his rank was expected to go into politics. Instead he fell in with Socrates, a philosopher who spent his days questioning people about what they thought they knew. In 399 BC an Athenian jury condemned Socrates to death for impiety and for corrupting the young. The loss turned Plato away from a political career.
